AX folder: snapshot photographs taken by Fred Voltmer of various demonstrations and other activities pertaining to the Free Speech Movement on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley during the 1964-1965 academic year. Views show crowds attending speeches, smaller groups of demonstrators, and police presence. Includes scenes outside of Sproul Hall and on Sproul Plaza, on the stage of the Greek Theatre, along Bancroft Way, in front of Wheeler Hall, and other campus locations. Mario Savio, one of the leaders of the movement, is depicted in a few images. 2022 additions: 35mm film negatives documenting various subjects: Free Speech Movement activities, December, 1964; a Vietnam Day Committee march in San Francisco in June, 1966; a demonstration pertaining to Dow Chemical in October, 1967; protest art painted on a fence at a construction site on the University of California, Berkeley campus; a Telegraph Avenue street fair on July 4, 1968; Eldridge Cleaver on the U.C. Berkeley campus, October, 1968; the National Guard in Berkeley, May, 1969 (likely in response to the unrest pertaining to People's Park activism); and demonstrations pertaining to the U.S. military in Cambodia, Spring, 1970.
